Bittersweet Revenge
Stories of Love, Hate, Mystery, and Intrigue
Bob Brown

Bittersweet Revenge is a collection of Bob Brown’s writings. His distinctive voice resonates throughout the stories, yet each tale is unique. They encompass contemporary and historical fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

The stories are intended for light reading and a few may be too farfetched for real life—or are they? In Queen for a Day Swindell didn’t say, “I’m here to steal your wife,” but that is what he meant. Mission in Trouble is a nonfiction mystery about Captain Hall, a North Pole explorer who died and was buried in Greenland in 1871 after claiming the ship’s doctor had poisoned him. Sinister humor dominates A Murder Misery when Don murders his business partner with ironic consequences. But humor is absent in Moon Shadows, a bleak tragedy about Molly, a nineteenth century prairie woman, who must bury her best friend in the middle of a cheerless moonlit night.

Each story in Bittersweet Revenge is a quick read with a beginning, middle, and end, ideal for a coffee break, a wait at a doctor’s office, or a lazy afternoon in a hammock.

Nathan's Valley
A story of love and adventure in the Montana wilderness.
Bob Brown

In 1885 a terrible mistake turns a simple act of chivalry into murder and forces two lovers to bear their children in a Montana wilderness.

Nathan was not a bad man or a man of great smarts. He was big, strong, impulsive, sensitive, headstrong, and handsome. Not all attributes for Nellie Lee to love—but enough. Nellie Lee was pragmatic, religious, durable, and pretty. If Nathan were ever to do one smart thing, it was to fall hopelessly in love with Nellie Lee.

Reviewers said:

  • If Louis L’Amour and Will Rogers co-authored a book, the results might well be Nathan’s Valley. Bob Brown weaves a witty love story into a tale of hair-raising adventure. DB

  • I loved every page! You made me laugh and cry. The characters came so alive I felt I had known them. Best of all, a satisfying after-glow lingered when the story ended. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt that kind of gratification from reading a story. BP

  • I’m going to miss these characters for a few days. JB

  • What a lovely story. There is good suspense and the characters are multi-dimensional. RS

In 1842, a spine-chilling mutiny climaxed with the summary hanging of the son of Secretary of War John Spencer. This sparked a national controversy and murder charges against Captain Alexander Mackenzie. Inspired by actual events, this novel describes a U. S. Navy sail ship’s harrowing days on the high seas and the tumultuous reception of Captain Mackenzie when the Somers arrived in New York. Intrigue and suspense began with a shrewdly planned mutiny and continued long after three of its perpetrators were hanged from the yardarm. Was Captain Mackenzie a courageous hero who saved his ship and men, or a murdering scoundrel? Would a court-martial clear his name, or sentence him to death?

The officers of the U. S. Somers, under threats of being thrown overboard by bloodthirsty mutineers, felt compelled to support the Captain in his veiled determination to hang the ringleaders. The consequences of their actions and the bazaar behavior of Captain Mackenzie shook the nation when they arrived back in the United States. The reader will be a privileged witness to the mutiny intrigue, the hanging, and Mackenzie's devious court room maneuvers during his murder trial.

“In his debut novel, Bob Brown has paid meticulous attention to historical detail in writing his terrific story replete with memorable characters and page-turning excitement.” James A. Cox, Wisconsin Bookwatch.

“Bob Brown has created a fascinating work of fiction based on these real historical events, which sparked national controversy and murder charges against Capt. Mackenzie.” Dot Seen, The Oak Ridger.

“Got your book, devoured it overnight, and want to tell you it’s a whopping good story. Hollywood pay attention. Huzzahs!” Paul Hemphill, Author of twelve books including Long Gone, Leaving Birmingham, Wheels, and recent release The Ballad of Little River.
